Musicians have all the software tools they need to build, control and monetize their own community of fans without middlemen. But instead of relying on 3rd party sites to make or break you, why not use these sites to draw traffic to your own site? Consider creating your own site (with your own domain name), build your own following (email list) and sell them access to your band (a membership site).

Hi Dave.

Thank you so much for sharing this presentation.

As a kid, music seemed like the simplest thing in the world. As I grew, I felt perpetually confused about how what I did naturally (make music) and what audiences seemed to do naturally (enjoy music) could be so embroiled in a complex system of business entities. Was I missing something?

Had I been exposed to some of the context-providing wisdom you have shared here, it would have saved me years of questioning myself and thinking that I was "missing" something and allowed me to see what took years to understand: it really is as simple as I thought when I was a kid.

Thanks for your positive contribution to demystifying the process for others.
