Hello Dave. I'll try to take your advice (in fact I am scheduling a concert in my home just now), but, with all due respect, it's you who are taking a really gloomy outlook: audiences are uninterested in acts playing in a new area, so by default they don't show up. Media exposure is useless. The whole idea of going out for the night is retreating after a tidal wave of computer games and home theatres. Patrons are "unattentive and ungrateful". Artists have accepted being broke ad a way of life.

The problem is not that you are wrong. In my opinion you are right, and home concerts seems to be a pretty feeble remedy in the face of such systemic failure. Maybe we should just accept that the zeitgeist has abandoned music as form of collective self expression and move on.

a lot of your ideas are spot on, but fyi this sort of thing is happening all the time in the current young music scene. House Shows in college towns are some of the best places i ever see music now a days. The age group is in no way 25-60, it's not sit down. There's no 2 sets w/ 20 minute break. and it's defintely got some aplification. Usually a great time, and DIY venues ala Todd P's venues in Brooklyn are also a great alternative to clubs.

I think you've got a great little future of music thing going, but to have any of it semi accurate, you really need to look at where hte future of music will come from. THE YOUTH. things are already happening. Fans and Musicians are already uniting. It's mostly going on in small DIY venues / house shows. You have to seek it out.

but first and formost, you can't go into the music business with stale ideas anymore. you will be forever banished into the cockrock bar band land. Do something new and interesting. stretch yourself.

just my 2 cents

Great post! With some initial trepidations, I experienced my first house concert experience in 2009 and am now hooked. The people hosting these shows are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people you will ever meet. It's an experience that no club will ever duplicate.

I will gladly pay $20-$25 to be in a comfortable space with other people who actually want to be there to enjoy the music and have meaningful conversations.

I've made a lot of new friends, discovered new artists and had a chance to talk to musicians one on one in ways that probably wouldn't happen in more traditional settings.

The general feedback I've heard from artists is that they prefer house concerts. They pay better, are treated much better and feel more appreciated.

Fran... thanks for being a crusader for the cause! We need to keep spreading the word so that artists and music fans can have meaningful connections to the music again.

Sorry I keep coming back in spurts...
But also, for artists like myself (I'm just releasing my first album independently and have virtually no fan base, or very local anyhow) house shows would be a great tour option even just selling CD's, shirts, buttons, or whatever. Or in other words just skip the donation part and ask instead that people purchase your items. Then your audience is buying your goods and keeping them to connect with instead of just throwing money at you, you know?

Thanks again. House shows are something I've been totally aware of and never even considered for myself.

Additionally, way to open folks eyes up to this. I think it's a great idea. I'm an independent locally based musician from the central valley of California, and I've got about 3 venues around here that I can even manage to book a show at, and those shows are generally poor attendance save for one. House shows sound wonderful to me.

David Bazan of Pedro The Lion has been doing this for a good couple years now in between his larger, full-band tours. It seems to work for him. Check it out here:

Alberto - try not to be so negative. No one knows what is going to work moving forward and getting in front of people can only help you. Maybe you should give it a try before dismissing the idea off hand, or talk with people who have done this before. You never know who you are going to meet and how they may be able to help you.
